Thanks to a generous TENSOR grant from the Mathematical Association of America, the women mathematicians and statistician in the Mathematical Sciences Department at Appalachian have received funding to hold our third annual workshop to show high school girls that women can and do study interesting and fun problems in mathematics and statistics:

Fall 2007 Program

9-9:30 Sign-In, Welcome by Sarah
9:30-10 Getting to Know You Activities:
Dodgeball led by Trina. Each undergraduate student is paired with a high school student.
Group Juggle name game led by Sarah.
Vicky uses cards to form groups. Groups sit around tables and introduce themselves.
10-10:45 Mathematics in Medical Imaging and solving systems of linear equations led by Trina.
10:45-11 Break
11-11:45 Problem Solving Discussion and Pants Activity led by Vicky.
11:45-1 Tour of Campus and Lunch at Mellow Mushroom. Each undergraduate walks over with a high school student and walks back with one - chatting about campus.
1-3 Problem Solving and Presentations.
3-3:30 Career Information led by Sarah. Quotes from people in diverse jobs, undergraduates share why they chose mathematics and plans (or lack of them) for after graduation. Go over Sarah's career handout.
3:30-4 Faculty discuss their work. Workshop Evaluation.
