Summer 2005 Offerings for Middle Grades Teachers
MAT 5980 Geometry and Measurement for Middle School Teachers (3)
May/June at Western Piedmont Community College.
Designed primarily for teachers of mathematics at grades 6-8, thos course is a deep and
connected study of geometry and measurement.
Emphasis will be on rich tasks using representational tools and models to
explore mathematical relationships. Problem solving, reasoning and proof, and
mathematical communication will also be emphasized.
MAT 5980 Number and Algebra for Middle School Teachers (3)
First Graduate Teacher Term on Campus.
Designed primarily for teachers of mathematics at Grades 6-8, this course is a deep and
connected study of number and operations and of algebra, including rational numbers,
proportional reasoning, and linear relations.
Emphasis will be on rich tasks using representational tools and models to
explore mathematical relationships. Problem solving, reasoning and proof, and
mathematical communication will also be emphasized.
Prerequisite: Enrollment in the Master of Arts in Middle Grades Education program is required.
