Honors in the Mathematical Sciences
The department offers honors courses open to all students who have
exhibited outstanding ability and interest in the mathematical
sciences.
There are five honors courses offered regularly by the department.
Introduction to Math
MAT 1010-410 |
not offered temporarily |
Open to all students who would like to receive University Honors
and are NOT planning on majoring in math or science.
The course is designed to introduce students to applications of
algebra, geometry and trignometry, with emphasis placed upon writing
technical documents and solving problems using a computer. |
Calc II
MAT 1120-410 |
Fall Semester |
Open to all students who received AP credit for or particularly excelled in
Calc I.
This course takes a more intense look at integration, sequences
and series. This course is an excellent choice for students
who would like to receive University honors and are planning to
major in Math or Science. |
Sophomore Honors Seminar
MAT 2510 |
Spring Semester |
Open to all students who have excelled in
Calc I and
Calc II.
This course introduces students to proof techniques, first through
formal logic and then through a survey of topics in undergraduate
mathematics. |
Junior Honors Seminar
MAT 3510 |
Spring Semester |
Open to all students who have excelled in a proof-oriented math
course, such as
analysis,
modern algebra or
sophomore honors seminar.
Topics for this course are chosen by the instructor with input
from the previous year's sophomore honors students. Recent topics
have included Set Theory, Twentieth
Century Mathematics, Cryptography, Music and Mathematics,
Voting Theory,
and Combinatorics and Graph Theory.
This course can be repeated if topic is different. |
Senior Honors Thesis
MAT 4510 |
Time arranged By Student and Advisor |
Open to students who complete
Junior Honors Seminar
with at least a B.
Students write a thesis on a topic of their choice with the
major professor of their choice. See the
Guide for writing honors theses for more information. |
Graduating With Honors
Honors in Mathematical Sciences
Students who complete at least 9 hours of honors work in
the department, earn at least a B in MAT 4510
and have a GPA > 3.45 in their major courses
will graduate with honors in the subject of their thesis.
Highest Honors in Mathematical Sciences
Students who meet the requirements for honors with grades of "A" in
department honors
courses and who earn a 3.65 or higher GPA in mathematical sciences courses
will graduate
with highest honors.
University Honors
Students can graduate with University honors provided they have
completed 15 hours of
honors course work (not counting thesis credits)
with a GPA of 3.4 in these courses. At least six
of these hours must be outside the student's major. The student must
complete a senior honors thesis that is interdisciplinary in nature,
with a reader from another department. Students can receive both
University honors and Honors in Mathematics.
For further
information, see the Department Honors Director (Dr. Vicky Williams)
or come by the
University Honors
Program office in Coffey Hall.
